I didn't know about Qualcomm's extension of CNN to 3/4-D.

When I heard a talk by Hinton post his student's 2012 discovery of the CNN algorithm he was asked if he foresaw further development of neural networks. He said no, unless new algorithms come along. This is definitely a new algorithm as is the Transformer architecture of LLM's.

Prior to the 2012 discovery of going deep and wide (ie levels and nodes) what is today know as a CNN was just calling a NN. Although I do believe convolution entails more than just going deep and wide.

Qualcomm holds patents on Gauge CNN and has open sourced the code. Folks can use it but will still need a QTL licence to sell product incorporating this discovery.

I am amazed this hasn't been highly publicized.
