Pirelli's New 64-Channel WaveMux(TM) System Sets Performance Standard For Long-Haul Systems
PR Newswire - February 25, 1998 16:08

LEXINGTON, S.C., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pirelli Cables and Systems North
America announces the introduction of its WaveMux(TM) 6400 system, a
Hyper-Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing system capable of transmitting 64
channels over a single optical fiber.
The WaveMux(TM) 6400, built on Pirelli's field-proven WDM technology,
establishes a new standard for long-haul transmission, while retaining the
capacity for incremental upgrades as demand for bandwidth increases.
"The WaveMux(TM) 6400 system is the pacesetter in optical technology for
long-haul applications," Walter Alessandrini, president and CEO of Pirelli
Cables and Systems North America, said. "The system provides speed and
performance beyond the scope of competing technologies in the WDM
marketplace."
He added, "As WDM technology progressed beyond 4-channel capability, we
began to talk of dense wavelength division multiplexing. Now, as we move
beyond the 40-channel threshold, we are into the realm of what we at Pirelli
refer to as Hyper-dense WDM technology."
The WaveMux(TM) 6400 platform will be on display at the Optical Fiber
Communication Conference and Exhibit in San Jose, Calif., Feb. 24-27. The
Pirelli exhibit will be in Booth 835.
"In addition to the technical superiority of our 64-channel system,
Pirelli offers the advantages to the marketplace that only a vertically
integrated supplier can provide," Alessandrini said. "Pirelli produces
all of the critical components of the system, which means that availability
and compatibility are not a limiting factor for the customer."
The WaveMux(TM) 6400 can be installed as a 4-channel system, which means
low initial cost, and be upgraded incrementally to its full 64-channel
capacity as demand requires, without affecting existing channels. The addition
of a Line Extender Module, or LEM, permits configuring numerous 64-channel
systems back-to-back for a transmission distance in excess of 8,000 kilometers
without regeneration.
The initially released system can drop/add up to 12 channels.
The system includes an Integrated Element Management System based on TMN
standards that allows one element manager to monitor up to 100 network
elements. Network management uses CMIP over Ethernet (based on OSI full seven-
layer stack) and TL1 over TCP/IP. In addition, it offers local craft interface
via RS-232.
The management system allows full system monitoring, alarm reporting and
report generation and can be used to configure the system on startup.
Pirelli Cables and Systems is a global manufacturer of communications and
power cables and systems. With 15,000 employees, 51 plants, research and
development centers in Italy, the United States, France, Great Britain and
Brazil, and total sales of more than $3.5 billion, Pirelli ranks among the
world leaders. The company is increasingly focusing its R&D and manufacturing
resources and competencies on leading edge technologies, based on optical
fibers and photonics for communications networks and superconductivity for
power transmission.
