bob,

your reply was very well crafted and a balanced outlook on the underlying issues driving the methods of short term traders and long term investors.

in earlier times i was, for the most part a long term investor. it was easier because news was scarcer and competition was not as fierce. also i was not nearly as inclined to make almost all of my bets (trades and/or investments) in the technology arena. but i strongly favor growth and have no interest in income - i want the company to plough that back into the company.

now my portfolio is really a continuim of equities - no shorts and no options - ranging from as short as a week and as long as forever. msft is an example of a "forever" stock, and is followed by dell, intc, hwp, amat, ibm and smod for example. smod may be for only the next 6 months and the others are somewhere in between. of course i do have a number of other technology stocks and they all require constant vigilance for news or weakened chart patterns. i don't need ta to tell me the movement in a stock is strong, neutral or weakening. i will check my fundamentals and the news to see if any response seems warranted and act accordingly.

i have attempted to learn ta and as an economist and statistician found many of the terms and methods arcane and dubious. too confusing for me! so i gave up and continued to develop my own style and find it leaves me comfortable at the end of every day. sure i make some blunders. they usually are wonderful learning learning experiences. the keep my mind open and alert.

thanks for your thoughtful reply.
