Some misc auction thoughts and comments;

There are a lot of smaller "2nd tier" type of bidders that are being
very aggressive that get overlooked when we just focus on the large
markets and large bidders. This is setting up what may end up being
interesting confrontations. A few;

Bidder Upfront leading in
Bidder # payment ($M) x markets
HighSpeed Com 3307 $2.470 15
Touch America 3309 6.770 31
Eclipse Comm 3285 10.000 71
Vanguard LMDS 3343 5.250 20
Actel Corp 3338 6.000 27

These companies are leading in large areas, but aren't yet competing
with the big guns. For example, Actel owns Michigan, but WNP is
leading in Detroit. Is this a satisfactory arrangement between the
two of them, or will it eventually come to a head? Another of
interest; HighSpeed leads in 15 areas in California, Oregon, and
Washington, right in the heart of McCaw territory. Will they
eventually go after some of McCaws larger cities, or will McCaw wipe
out HighSpeed, or will they agree to coexist in this manner?
Vanguard is dominating in the Ohio-Pennsylvania are (with some W. Va
and NY). What will happen with the likes of Pittsburg, Cleveland,
Rochester, etc. Sooner or later does this all come to a head?
Touch America is mostly after the northern plains, ie Montana, Idaho,
N. Dakota, etc. Eclipse appears to want a national presense, bidding
mainly in the B-Block auction, but leading in about 20 A-Block
licenses.

It looks like the real competition may shape up to be for the B-Block
licenses. A lot of big players are really after these, including
NextBand, who outside of their target areas, are bidding on a lot of
B-Block. The leader is Baker Creek who is currently ahead in 237
markets. Eclipse is right in there bidding on several also. Two
that look to be big players in the B-Block are about shut out after
21 rounds; PCTV, with the forth largest upfront payment, has only
been bidding on B-Block, but currently only leads in 6 markets. Also
Teligent (AUCO) has only shown interest in the B-Block, but currently
leads in only 1. Either bidding will really heat up, or some are
going to be disappointed.
