Elroy,

Re: Does it matter whether whether Cymer is in a business that will exist in 2008? It makes a three-fold difference in the price of the stock.

In theory, you are partly right (it does not make a 3-fold difference, more like 30-40%). In reality, I don't know of any investors who are looking at 10 years down the road. Do you think Intel is going to have the same dominance in PCs in 2008 (are PCs going to be around in 2008?)? Do you think the markets will anywhere remotely close to the same for Microsoft and Cisco? Ten years is an eternity in high tech and NO ONE can predict anywhere near that far ahead. Furthermore, in the case of optical vs. X-ray lithography, it is almost a given that X-ray will be pushed back several generations, so the DPMI/UT deal is not a great surprise.

By the way, I am a CYMI long since it was at 34 (so I don't dump my shares easily) and I have held it because CYMI will be the dominant DUV laser supplier for the next couple years. Beyond that, who knows?
