I followed up on applying to my broker as a sole proprietor with a new EIN. The "new accounts" person I talked to today blessed this. Contrary to what I was told before, she said it was not simply a matter of how the account was titled but also that no two margin accounts may have the same tax ID. This is based on a Federal Reserve requirement allowing only one margin account per firm/client. I downloaded the EIN application from the IRS ("SS-4") and I'll register it by phone Monday. Watt Trading Ltd. is born. Thanks for your help.
