Yes.....you could trade with others now....no need for a market. However, the stock has no value without a market. Once a market is made in a stock the shares of an equity are simply equal, without regard to certificates. Certificates are only to prove ownership of the stock outside of the brokerage. For instance if you stuffed stock certificates in a safe or drawer. You do not have them in a brokerage yet you can prove ownership at anytime by taking them to a broker. When you get to a brokerage the share number of the certificate is of the same value of brokerage shares plus or minus adjustments due to splits, dividends or changes due to merger or other material changes.
