So now management is saying that the asian crisis is resulting in slower demand for cpq computers in asia! Oh really. Isn't that interesting. I wonder why dell computers are immune to the asian phenomenon. After all dell reported earnings recently and indicated strong asian demand.

Wait a minute it is all coming clear to me now. Yes, I am a fly on the wall and there is Joe Asia inside a Best Buy in Korea contemplating whether he should buy that cpq computer. Let's listen in shall we?

"Hmm, I really like that cpq computer. But gee whiz, I really am kind of broke. My real estate is worthless, my job is in jeopardy and the cat's got the flu. Maybe I should pass on that shiny new cpq. But wait, I remember seeing an add on my tv that was repossessed yesterday for dell computers. Now what was that 800 number for dell?"

CPQ investors,

Just received the following from broker via FAX:

COWEN MORNING CALL (2/27)

Compaq - Strong Buy

Weakness provides opportunity to build large positions.
Channel inventory issue overblown. Demand is solid, see no risk to post-split Q1 EPS of $0.35 E (vs 0.30). CPQ offers brand name, scale and is likely to gain market share. DEC deal puts it in strong position in NT. (Analyst: Chu)

That doesn't sound right to me

Another person on this thread suggested that Compaq management wished to re-purchase its own stock at a lower price as part of the employees' benefit program

If I was into conspiracy theory, I'd go with the other theory on this thread, that a low price helps on the Digital acquisition.

However, I do doubt that CPQ management would get into these murky waters, because the chances of serious sh*t happening to them, were they to be found out, just seem to high to be worth the risk.

Going back to the Tandem acquisition, the share price tanked, immediately upon and for a few weeks after the announcement, only to then rise dramatically.

Personally, I am waiting for the announcements of large scale layoffs at Digital or selling off of parts of Digital, before I sell some (or all) of my CPQ and buy Dell. I have no inside knowledge of this, its just what I expect to happen based on the fact they they obviously dont need (or want) all of it, plus there must be a large overlap in central functions.

Ibexx:

I am reading this late. If someone already responded on this please ignore this.

Campaq can't re-purchase any stock due to DEC merger.

Cheers
