Bill Gates is five steps ahead of the competition in strategic planning. Whatever moves he makes today, like getting Leo Hindery of TCI to bite, are simply chess-like moves towards his ultimate goal of capturing the "king" (total control, within a Windows environment, of digital commerce, entertainment, education and telecommunications).

My read is that his true objective is to convince the cable systems to adopt his preferred 450 progressive-scan transmissions and, a few years later, with his new satellite system, leap-frog the cable systems and telcos to become the number one, worldwide supplier of digital data, all within a Windows environment.

What other game would keep Bill going?

Zenith is very smart not to be drawn into the standards war. Whichever way the wind blows, great display and audio units will be in high demand.
