Merck very rarely does credit offers and they
are quickly bought by institutions seeking
safety. You can't beat there long-term
consistency in earnings and their relatively
conservative management.
I would trust Merck's mgt. when they say that
they intend to remain independent and not make
any large purchases or merge.
I am not convinced that mega-mergers are good
for the long-term. Mgt., the bankers, the lawyers,
etc do very well and short-term investors do well.
You end up with stock in a company that you might
not want. And the company has to have bigger
blockbuster drugs for it to mean anything.
The only takeover that has been better than the
original for my family is when my father bought
MEDCO stock and then got Merck at way below market.
