Late yesterday, HUTCHINSON TECHNOLOGY INC (Down 2 to 22-1/4 at
9:46 ET) said it recorded a net loss of $0.56 a share through the
first eight weeks of the 2Q of fiscal 1998. The company cited weak
demand for its disk drive suspension assemblies, and said
shipments were trailing the prior quarter level. It said it had
shipped 64 million disk drive suspensions in the first eight weeks
of the 2Q, compared with 135 million units during the entire 1Q of
fiscal 1998. The computer disk drive component maker said the drop
in demand was due to inventory reduction efforts among the major
disk drive manufacturers. Analysts were expecting the company to
lose $0.57 a share in the 2Q, according to First Call. (Reuters
