Kevin
why? It is true that amd needs help and it is true that fab25 is unlikely to produce 65M/year as Paul indicated but.....
The deal starts in 3q/98 and for 2 years so it is probably going to cover k7 as well. Meanwhile amd is getting if not $$$ amount from ibm but at least credit which would worth for amd a lot.
Where are the conclusions about 3nd rated fabs are coming from? IBM would be producing k6+3d and I would think that they would want some yields from it too. And why not copper since power pc is shrinking?

Yse, it is a desperate act - committed by a desperate man.

Oh well, when your boat is sinking, you'll stick anything in the hole to plug the leak.

Kevin -

Re: "This deal doesn't make any sense to me, other than a desperate measure to keep AMD going until Dresden is up and running."

IBM is sure to charge enough to cover both their fab depreciation and their profit. On top of this, AMD will have to continue paying their own fab depreciation and expenses. It will be tough for AMD to cover double the costs while selling CPUs for sub $1000 PCs.
