Albert, The price drops were needed to deny AMD funds in the long run. Intel burnt that money on the altar of monopoly, to stay predominat as they try a microchannel private club. It looks like there will be few members in that club if AMD gets IBM making K6-7 as well as the .25 fab. In fact Intel has admitted this and is making a crippled version to make a feeble and transparent clutch at the market it claimed it was abandoning.

Albert,

Here here. I agree with your assessment. AMD is finally on the right track and they have forged some very important relationships with Compaq, DEC, IBM, Acer. Adding capacity was the next logical step. Obviously these customers must be confident in AMD's roadmap. And if they're entertaining AMD, they must not be so happy with Intel. You don't part ways with Intel unless you're unhappy with Intel's tactics. They realize that to keep Intel honest, they need AMD.

The net result of increasing supply of CPU chips will be an overall decrease in CPU chip prices. There will be no winners (read AMD/INTC/NSM) if chip supply increases but INTC stands to lose the most given their astronomical profit margins. Note INTC will continue to make money but 50% gross margins will come sooner rather later.
