Visual Tech Releases New PC With Low-Cost Alpha Chip
February 27, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Visual Technology Corp. said it will start selling
the VT-Alpha533PC/64 personal computer, based on a 64-bit RISC processor,
in March.
This PC uses the low-cost, 64-bit Alpha 21164PC RISC processor of Digital
Semiconductor, an arm of Digital Equipment Corp. of the United States. It will be
sold mainly to computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing users.

The processor operates at 533MHz and performs at 14.3 SPECint95 and 17.0
SPECfp95. There is an external third cache memory of 1MB. A Motion Video
Instruction set is built into the processor.


The PC also uses the Millenium graphics board from Matrox Graphics Inc. of
Canada. It has 4MB of video memory. The main memory is dual in-line memory
module, synchronous DRAM that is expandable to 512MB using 4 memory slots.

The expansion slots are a 64-bit PCI x 2, 32-bit PCI x 2 and ISA x 2. The hard
disk and CD-ROM drives use the enhanced IDE interface.

Standard features include 64MB main memory, 3.2GB hard drive and 32x
(maximum) CD-ROM drive. The PC measures 430mm side x 150mm high x
420mm deep. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is pre-installed.

Prices start at 398,000 yen (US$3,130).

Expressvu uses the LSI/EchoStar box, but Divicom does the headends. This
contract is worth about $15M in 1998....................
