Fumble, you are correct about the extra 16 Kbps channel, but as far
as I know from the european Telco's they allowed it in the beginning,
but do not allow it now. (in the beginning their switches had it
enabled) Maybe not everyone on this thread knows it, but ISDN is BIG
in europe. The TElcos have spend billions of dollars in the last
10 years to upgrade all the old analog and relais based exchanges
to digital ones. In the Netherlands an ISDN connection has the
same subscription fee as 2 analog lines (hence you get 2 simultaniouse
lines), and the cost of operation (using the phone) is the same. This
is the reason why it is so popular. Also don't rule out the Primary
Rate ISDM (1920 Kbps => 2048 Kbps-64Kbps signalling), in the UK for
example is the turnover point between multiple BRI (2x64Kbps)
connections and PRI about 6 BRI connections, so if you need more than
6 BRI (12 channels of 64Kbps) it is cheaper to go for the 30 channel
PRI circuit. This is very atractive for companies.

Another nice thing about BRI from the Telco is, that you can apply
for more than 2 phone numbers on your ISDN connection. In Holland
the fee is 1 Dfl (US$0.50) per month / per number subscription.
We use here the S/T interface of ISDN, so you can connect up to 8
devices onto it, and have 2 devices active at the time.

The other nice thing about having 8 numbers, you only use 1 at the
time, and tell only you real frends the other one, or use one of the
other 8 and change the use of them if you get unwanted phone calls.

ISDN give's a lot of playing room.
