What exactly does DELL produce for itself? Where would DELL be without the INTCs, MSFTs, MUs, IOMs, QNTMs etc? Out of biz I would think.

One might also turn the sentence around and ask the same question. The word "symbiotic" comes to mind.

In another vein, the chicken does all the important work, but Tyson makes the profits.

Joe: "What good would Dell be without MSFT, et.al?" LOL!! How'sa bout turning that one around. What good would MSFT, INTC, etc., be without a Dell to sell the whole package, eh! ;-) It's the same old argument I heard back in 1992 when I bought my first 1000 shares of Dell at the then rich price of $29 a share. Of course that's been 6 splits ago......jeeeezzzz, who'da thunk it!!
But I will admit that at these valuations I think Greenspans' comment is apropo, ie...."irrational exuberance." But hey, I'm laughing alllll the way to the bank.

Regards!

John~

Jeff,

So, are you saying that I should be looking for the NEXT Intel or Microsoft, but not the next DELL?????

Hmmmm......I guess I will have to modify my search. I've been looking for the NEXT Dell.......

David

Geeez...Where would Gen Motors, Ford be without all the various suppliers that contribute all the various and sundry pieces and parts that go into assembling one of their automobiles....notice I said assemble, not build! Same scenario....just different end product.

If you don't like Dell....SHORT IT!!!! Heh guys, get another tombstone ready!! Put it next to Candlestick and McNabb!!!!!

Jeff, Re:<<Whoever is buying DELL right now does not really understand valuation.>>

Are you speaking of valuation according to historical standards? When long term rates were above 7%? Just what is your criteria for measuring value?

Apart from the excellent reasons given by SP Mach, Message 3552518, for why Dell will continue to grow, why would any investor want to buy an underperforming asset? We obviously don't care how it goes up, we're paying for the fact that we won't get an earnings warning blaming SE Asia for shortfalls. The simple fact is, we're paying for performance and outstanding performance at that. As for "mooching off MSFT and INTC", I guess I don't understand what you are trying to communicate there.

Hmmm...I wonder where INTC, MSFT,IOM etc would be without the DELLs,IBMs,CPQs and HWPs of this world. Windows (and Pentium for that matter) works best inside a "box". I guess you could use them in a microwaves, washers, dryers etc.. but that is for the future, if at all. For now though, the "box" is it, and the "BOX MAXIMUS" appears to be....you guessed it!
I think it is still a good buy,..even now..

Good investing!

Charles.

It is interesting, Jeff, that the market has now
valued DELL as high as General Motors! $140 a share!
In the middle of '95, DELL was 2.39 (1.20 based upon
666 M. shares). A year ago, when DELL was at 25 (65 X
its '1990 Cap) their earning and revenues were both about
two-thirds as high as in this recent "blow-out"
quarter. Hewlett-Packard probably earned more in
this past (soon to announce) quarter as DELL did all
last year. Post-split, we're looking at about 660 M
shares here -- That's only a third less than HWP. Is
Michael Dell paying somebody off?
