Infoseek Expands International Presence and Provides Rapidly Growing Internet
Explorer 4.0 Market With the Ultimate in Internet Search and Discovery

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Infoseek Corporation
(Nasdaq: SEEK) today announced an agreement with Microsoft Corporation
(Nasdaq: MSFT) to integrate its award-winning* search engine with Internet
Explorer 4.0 in the United Kingdom. Users can quickly access Infoseek directly
from the Internet Explorer 4.0 user interface, and immediately take advantage
of Infoseek's natural language search technology -- localized specifically for
U.K. users
-- for fast and accurate searches.
Infoseek's U.K. site is one of 10 international versions of the leading
Internet navigation service and highlights the company's commitment to attract
international users with localized versions of its search and discovery
service.
In addition, recent data from leading market research firm Dataquest shows
Internet Explorer's market share increasing quickly, and, according to the
Dataquest report, is expected to move into the number one spot by the second
quarter of 1998.
"This agreement is a major step in our international business, which
continues to grow rapidly," said Barak Berkowitz, Infoseek's vice president of
marketing and international. "Providing truly localized search capabilities
gives international Internet Explorer 4.0 users a better Internet experience,
and combined with Infoseek's ease, speed and accuracy, they are more likely to
make Infoseek their primary online service as well as search tool."
Microsoft working with leading search engine companies in the U.K. is a
direct response to feedback from British Internet users. Martin Gregory,
Internet Explorer product manager at Microsoft Corp., explained: "Every year
we conduct exhaustive customer research on our products and services. The main
feedback we recently received was that Internet users want fast access to
relevant content. This agreement with leading search engines and directories
will not only support Internet usage in the U.K., but will direct U.K. surfers
to the best the web can offer. The search feature in Internet Explorer 4.0
will be the best place for Internet users to get the web the way they want
it."
Under the terms of the agreement, Infoseek will place a download button
for Internet Explorer on its top U.K. channel pages. This agreement
strengthens existing partnerships with Microsoft that include several
promotional and revenue sharing arrangements. Infoseek is one of five search
engines offered on Internet Explorer 4.0's U.K. explorer bar, a specific area
of the interface dedicated to search and other Internet tools.
