SCO set to release UnixWare 7 By David Pendery InfoWorld Electric Posted at 6:04 PM PT, Mar 3, 1998 According to its schedule announced last November, SCO next week will release the latest version of its Unix operating system, UnixWare 7. Vendors that support UnixWare will join SCO at four sites in the United States and Canada to announce the new OS, as well as demonstrate various applications running on different hardware platforms utilizing UnixWare 7. Compaq in California and Canada, Data General in Massachusetts, and IBM in New York are sponsoring launch events in conjunction with SCO and other companies. SCO last November outlined the features it would include in UnixWare 7, up to then known as Gemini. At that time, the company said it would release four versions of the product, one each for enterprise, application/database, mail/messaging, and intranet server uses. The enterprise and departmental versions are expected to be released next week, with companies such as Oracle running their databases and other applications on different high-end hardware platforms. SCO also announced during November and December that it would include extensions in UnixWare 7 to optimize network computing based on Intel's "Lean Client System Design and Network Server Configuration" standard; Java-based client/server administration, Java support, and Web-based network interfaces; and support for SCO's Tarantella application broker interface. The operating system is based on SCO's SVR5 kernel. The kernel was announced last August and boasts improved raw performance, process synchronization, scheduling, and system memory management; support for I2O; and support for as much as 64GB of main memory and one terabyte of storage. High-performance technology is to include support for clustering architectures, Compaq's PCI Hot Plug, and ccNUMA. The operating system will also have some 64-bit characteristics, including 64-bit file systems, libraries, commands, and APIs. SCO, in Santa Cruz, Calif., can be reached at (408) 425-7222 or sco.com .
