Apple halts development at its Newton handheld unit
Friday February 27, 5:45 pm Eastern Time

CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb 27 (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. said on
Friday it will stop development work on the Newton handheld computer
and the eMate 300 laptop for kids, another step to redirect its
resources to its Macintosh computers.

Apple said it will continue to market and sell its current inventory
of the Newton and eMate machines and will continue to provide
technical support to customers and developers.

What's more, 3Com Corp. introduced its version of a handheld
computer, dubbed the Palm Pilot, in 1996. Within a year, the device
grabbed 51 percent of the market, partly at the expense of Newton,
according to market researcher Dataquest.

The "Palm III"...huh. I wonder if that is a registered brand name. You know what I'm getting at I'm sure...Billy Gates attempt to steal the name and/or ride the shirt tails of 3Com's success.
