Uh, Harry, this is not a street fight. Certainly Microsoft was threatened. And perhaps you could characterize Netscape as "mouthing off," though I wouldn't. However, monopolies being threatened and sometimes overturned is a natural course of events and beneficial for the consumer. Companies that enjoy monopolies are allowed to "fight back" with the exception that they are not allowed to leverage their monopoly powers because that's not a fair fight. The question isn't whether or not Microsoft fought back. The question is whether or not, in fighting back, Microsoft took illegal advantage of its monopoly position in operating systems.

Indeed, that Microsoft was threatened by the browser platform is a major argument of the Department of Justice that Microsoft used illegal tactics.

Gee, guess Microsoft should have rolled over or sold out instead of fighting back as fiercely as they could.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what you, Sal, Reggie, etc can't seem to comprehend?

All, please take this test:

1. Microsoft is a monopoly? (Yes/No)

2. Microsoft gave away IE for free to prevent Netscape from having the funds to improve/invent others products? (Yes/No)

3. Microsoft used its monopoly position to enter another market by forcing OEMs to bundle their product? (Yes/No)

4. IE is an integrated product of the OS? (Yes/No)

5. IE for Unix is an integrate product of the OS? (Yes/No)
