Yeah, quite neat. But have you seen the latest from Island? (www.isld.com). It's a pushing Java client where you type in the symbol and it shows you the book in real time (top ten or so).

Now, this is (as far as i know) some guy doing it in his free time. How come Big Mighty Datek can't write a similar thing to have real time quotes pushed ?

HTML is ok if you're prepared to accept that YOU have to push the button for an update. But if you'd like to be updated whenever there's news (tick) you'll need either a dedicated socket client, or a java applet.

Thanks Jon.

Heh-heh-heh, this is one of the things that I was hoping for when I
made the suggestion in post 6990 about rolling your own button page.

Among the users of Datek there have to be a number of people with
HTML programming experience - either very basic, like my own, or
more advanced, like yours. And since the HTML code in Datek's pages
or yours or anyone else's can be viewed, analyzed, copied, and
modified, then it is possible for other people to create and
demonstrate a variety of interfaces. If a lot of people participate,
the synthesis of all their ideas should lead to a great interface.

I've started a thread specifically for this, and reposted a couple
of posts from this thread to get it going:

Nice work Jon. Might be in Datek's best interest to hire you and then maybe we can get a simple border around the quote table cells <G>.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Have you thought about starting your own on-line brokerage??!! <G>.

I am open to suggestions for improvement. Keep in mind that as
a third-party HTML interface, there are significant limitations -
in particular, I can't change what Datek's server sends.

No, but if you know how to write a Netscape Plug-In, perhaps you
could filter out the graphics and formatting commands, and replace
them with your own?

I've updated the Super-Express for Datek page:

stockclub.com

Thanks to everyone here and on the "Datek Web Pages" thread for the feedback. I've trimmed things down further and rearranged the page a bit.

Extending the "less is more" principle, I've replaced those big ugly buttons with simple text links. (Used some tricky JavaScript to perform the form POST.)

I also moved the links to the bottom of the top frame and put the password field in a popup. I'd hesitated initially to put the password in a popup, since I thought this would be "scarey" for users - but there really isn't any security difference between it being in a popup or being on the page. Still, the feeling IS "scarey". :)

I haven't fiddled with styles on the top frame yet, and I can probably squeeeze it even more.

I'll see about getting rid of the logo and buttons in the bottom frame for MSIE maybe tomorrow. For Netscape, this would require a plugin - quite a bit of work - but I think I should be able to come up with a nice treat for those of you using MSIE 4.01.
