I just see the nation of India as highly unusual, and lacking much
of the commonality that other nations display.
...
Europe has religion in common to a greater extent than India,
yet no nation there.

And what is the trend you see in what Europe is trying to become ?
Common monitory policy ! Common currency ! No restrictions in
movement of goods and people ! Common standards !
They may not ever call themselves United States of Europe ...but
that is what they are trying to be.

I think India will do fine! The problem does not seem to be that
people hate people with other languages/religions as much as a
system that seems to tolerate and reward the criminals and corrupt
and they have to somehow fix that. More free media to expose
corruption ? More enforcement of laws ? Not sure I have the
answers, but diverse states have always existed and will exist.
Talk to someone in Europe about how many languages/dialects that
even their current day nation really has. You may be surprised !
Only large unwilling empires like British and Soviet have crumbled.

OK, I need to get off the soapbox and back to work. Despite
what I say above, I haven't a clue <ggg> :-)

Peter: I don't know the answers Peter but let me say this, inspite of the differences in languages, slight variations in culture, food habits, religious diversities, and other various and sundry regional differences there seems to be some sort a thread binding the country and its people together. I don't know what this is, perhaps it is the 'Hindu culture' (not the religion) running through the vein of the people in spite of the existence of various religions, perhaps it has something to do with the genes,or may be it is a geographical thing. Anyway I don't know what it is but from travelling through various parts of the country I have noticed the presence of an invisible force that somehow binds the people together no matter what language one speaks or what religion one belongs to,go figure.

I certainly hope the country survives as it is now in spite of what others might say. Then again the world power-politics the way it is I am sure there will be 'political forces' who might wish for a destabilized, broken-up,disintegrated India as opposed to a unified country,be it Pakistan,China,Russia,Western Europe, the U.S. or even Bangla Desh but that is besides the point and that is strictly from a political and strategic point of view.Sorry I digress,so let me stop my speculation and conjecture.
