Hulloa irthifty!

I applied the mature label because I am believing an industry so significantly influenced by manufacturing economies of scale will ultimately resolve itself into a few concentrated players. In such an industry, the existence of a proliferation of small players makes no sense, and we have observed a textbook case study of precisely such an occurrence in our beloved HDD industry.

Although I am not a knowledgeable student of history, those examples of industries that I may readily summon to mind do not necessarily connect maturity with the cessation of growth and innovation. These days, I am engrossed in the study of the early history of the automobile, which bears striking resemblances to the PC industry. I'm drafting a research paper on this which I hope complete soon.

As a matter of personal opinion, I believe there is a good chance that the PC industry and its related adjuncts will become the largest industry in the world within the next 15 years, surpassing energy, automobiles, and tourism. Clearly, the disk drive industry is a key piece of the overall PC picture. As I have stated previously here and elsewhere, I believe the advent of high bandwidth internetworking and high-capacity delivery vehicles will contribute to demand growth in our beloved HDD industry.

God bless,
PX
