my larger question is the issue of investment in foreign firms where the exchange rate comes into play. i assume it is less profitable the stronger the us dollar gets in relation to the co's native currency. An added violatility factor. Am i off?

If I am not mistaken it is possible for foreign companies to invest through middlemen in the US making the deal in dollars. The only 'penalty' of exchange would be when going into and out of a deal.
