run of the mill power supplies last longer than that.

Yes, I actually have one that's been operating for 2 1/2 years
other than the PC P&C Silencer, I mean. Unfortunately that's
a record with the exception of an ancient Dell 486 which I
use for a disk farm (an ancient disk farm<g>). I've had three
others fail in under two years. Typically it's the fan that
fails or, just as bad, starts making an unbearable racket.

Actually the predecessor to my Silencer had its fan fail
completely--stop dead--in the wee hours, naturally.
Fortunately a thermal protector shut the PC down (at least
THAT worked), but the power supply was dark roast toast.

I'm hopeful the PC P&C will last a lot longer. The Silencer
stated MTBF is 70,000 hours (8 yrs), same as all but the high-end
Turbo-Cool which is 100,000 hours (11.4 yrs). I run my systems
24x7 though.

Don't forget the UPS. Should be an integral part of any
system IMHO (possible exception game playing). A 650 va UPS
keeps my two main systems (including 17 & 21" monitors)
running for 10 minutes, which has saved my bacon lot's of times.
You can get one for a low end system for $75 or so, only
about half again what a decent surge protector costs.

Forgive me if this has been discussed here before--I've just
skimmed the thread and might have missed it.
