Anything can happen when the time frame measured is as short a one year. As the length of the time frame measured increases to 3 years, 5 years, 10 years and beyond; the type of comparison you report probably disappears and the case for index funds grows stronger and stronger if you are a long-term investor. Of course if the intention is to trade in and out, the situation is different.
