Brian H., all: This is another of Surfer Mike's Deep Throat posts, names not revealed to protect the innocent . . . . A buddy works with a sports related company who did all the advance work for a certain very large contest played in a certain southern california town under the sponsorship of a certain telecom company with headquarters in that said town--jesus even the chuckster might sniff this one out. Anyway, all the guys and gals got Q phones and then ran around San Diego (oops, blew it)like crazy people for two weeks getting all in readiness for the Great Event. My buddy, and all the people in this line of work, are intense cell phone users; they could not work without them, they are never in a fixed location, and they must stay in constant contact with one another. Final fact: they worked and work very closely with the Sprint PCS people. My buddy is not a Q shareholder, and knows less about technology than I do which is an incredible statement. Here's his report: absolutely loved the Q phone for its looks, feel, voice clarity ("the best"), features (loved the message features, voice mail, silent vibration)--way cool. Absolutely hated the belt clip which he and his co-workers found so annoying ( it just doesn't work, damn phone falls off belt to ground smashola) that many, many, many returned phones to Sprint as a result of this failed feature! It would seem our boys spent all their time on engineering the frigging phone and turned over the belt clip design to Ericy, MOT, or chuckj. Big boo-boo. He also reported that CDMA coverage is spotty even in the home base area of the Mother Ship! Dropped calls just going from San Diego to La Jolla. For those of you not familiar, topography in this neck of the woods includes lots of ups and downs and my bud said he'd lose a call in a depression. He is now back at his HQ location and Sprint PCS has just handed out dozens of samples of "new" Q phones which "are combination phones". Under intense grilling by the head techie of the Q thread, my bud figured out that these little pups are dual-mode but had no clue whether these were the pure Q phone or the Sony/Q phone or what. But he left no doubt about the reception: people are going crazy about them, there's a waiting list, rave reviews, etc. etc. So it looks like the First Generation Q phone will find its way to the nearest Tech Museum, but Gen Two might well blow the doors off. And that's the scam what am. Surfer Mike
