The litmus test of whether Dell is 'taking over the world of computers' will be when the Justice Department decides to investigate them. We know Microsoft has taken over the world of software, but computers are a simple commodity, like bread or something. There is no advantage to getting a Dell vs. Gateway vs. Micron, etc. The price differences are negigible, the service levels are negligible, the warranties are the same, the component quality is identical, and they'll become obselete at the same time.

Dell is simple doing a better job at controlling costs and hawking their wares. All other things being equal, mind-share is the difference.
