If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Dell split executes on Friday March 6, which means it opens at the split price on Monday March 9. In your example both parties will have 200 shares on Monday at the new split price. One could purchase 100 shares at the close on Friday and on Monday they would have 200 shares at the new price. This applies to all options also. The option strike price is cut in half and you get 2 times the contracts. 10 contracts of March 130's presplit become 20 contracts of March 65's post split. Great eh!

I believe the record date is for those who purchase stock and hold the certificates themselves as opposed to having the shares held in common by a brokerage house. Not really applicable anymore. Anyone who buys before the actual split will take part in the split.

Thread, please correct me if I am wrong on this.
