I agree. I posted that letter as an example to illustrate the sentiments and expectations of the average investor. On the same topic -- I was recently helping a friend who wanted a portfolio of 4 Vanguard funds for the "long term" (which he defined as at least 15 years). I asked him to put 25% in each of the following : Vanguard Total Bond Index, Vanguard Index 500, Vanguard Small Cap Index and Vanguard Total International. And guess what, when I mentioned Total International, he started blaming me for asking him to put money in what he called "a losing proposition". And they say things have changed a lot in the last 20 years! Dipy.
