Shirley, We hoofed the NDP after a few bad years, and we also found a huge pile of hidden debt, dozens of party stalwarts who were placed on payrolls and never told where to work, stupid people appointed to committees, and many other things. For many years the NDP has concentrated on school boards and city councils here. Whenever they had a meeting they NDPs would have a rump meeting earlier and the party line would be told them and they would vote that way. In a majority they would run the meeting like a crooked penny mine meeting, open-vote-closed, goodbye, no discussions, as the hard or persistent ones were ruled out of order. The NDP have a debate style where they ignore what you say and just keep talking. Polite people wait for a gap, and there is none. I hope that BC gets the vote out. What happened here is their excesses went aginst the unions. They had to cut the wage increases but they did not want to roll the wages back so they brought in a few unpaid holidays("Rae" days) and even though they were wise and universal lost them union support. The wages are so high in many city positions that the taxes needed have become so bad that Toronto might lose 75% of it's small retail stores. The residence tax rate is 1.24%, the apartment around 4%, small commerce around 7% and industry 11% (property taxes based on the assessed value, which is market value) Can you imagine a capital yax of 11%?? All Metro industry will vanish in a few years. All because they taxed residences low and tried to make industry pay. And this is for the same or lesser services(industry usually does it's own trash removal). As they say Dumb and Dumber are typical politicians. I cannot understand why they permit this dumb vote splitting. Did they not see what happened in Italy with 20-30 candidates and the winner getting in with 7%, so in comes proportional representing, and a sea if idiots in Parliament. As a result we have the worst teachers in the world now. The large money has attracted those good at wanting lots of money instead of those who like to teach. The old comment about late work and extra hours, all lies. Get out of the way in the school parking lot at 3:20 PM, as 95% leave. There is 1-2 left to run the detention room, but that is it. I could rant on. The problem is we cannot elect anyone to deny them even when they are so transparently anti student. Wages now take so much monet that there is none left for the supply budget, and so a $75,000 teacher has $500 budget for supplies. I say make that a $40,000 teacher and that would free $35,000 for supplies. Of course the NDP is real big in school boards, and the teachers read the party line to students all the time. The whole system is badly broken. Mulrooney and the conservatives have killed the conservatives for ever, the only hope for them ever to get any power is to combine with reform and take the lesser role as punishment for their guilt for Mulrooney. If they do not they will never have power again in living memory of all those alive during Mulrooney's reign. And yet with those 2 seats they cling to memories of power and refuse to join reform. Reform needs to reform as well. It is too bad that the other parties try to tar them with racist brushwork that is false, it is just a vote denial method. The only hope for conservative policies to get ahead is for the conservative policies of reform and PCs to unite rationally to make a new party. Let us not forget we have been here before with the Progressives and concervatives joining to make the Progressive Conservatives, is that and oxymoron? The right wing must unite to win, or else spend 40 years in the wilderness. Bill .
