Sharp to Revise FY97 Chip, LCD Production Downward

March 2, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sharp Corp. is backtracking from its estimate in November of its production of semiconductors and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for fiscal 1997, which runs through March 1998.
A Sharp representative estimated that the company would produce 252 billion yen (US$1.97 billion) worth of microchips and 228 billion yen (US$1.78 billion) worth of LCDs in the current fiscal year, down from previous estimates, due to falling prices of the devices.

In May 1997, Sharp estimated its production of semiconductors at 260 billion yen (US$2.03 billion). The estimate was revised upward to 265 billion yen (US$2.07 billion) in November 1997 when the company released its midterm settlement of accounts.

Its downward revision cut the initial projection of LCD output from 340 billion yen (US$2.65 billion) to 275 billion yen (US$2.15 billion) at the same time.
