Ibexx, Article...Intel, Microsoft ready workstation initiatives...

March 2, 1998

InfoWorld Electric via NewsEdge Corporation : Intel and Microsoft next Friday will unveil initiatives aimed at cracking the last bastion of RISC/Unix-based workstations -- high end graphics. Along with broad support from software vendors porting their products to the Intel architecture and Windows NT, the companies will announce a new version of the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) aimed at workstation applications.

The Intel Workstation Software Developer's program aims to make Intel-based workstations the development and execution platform of choice for workstation ISVs, said Anand Chandrasekher, general manager of Intel's Workstation Products division. The program teams Intel's software and architecture ISVs to tune their applications to Intel-based workstations, he explained.

Intel maintains eight Application Support Centers (ASCs) at five Intel locations worldwide to provide a variety of porting and compiling tools to ISVs, Chandrasekher said. On average, ISVs see a 40-percent increase in their software's performance after tuning, he said.

In addition, Intel works with OEMs to encourage them to open their own ASCs, providing an ASC blueprint and specialized training.

Compaq opened an Intel ASC at its facilities last year, and NEC will announce Monday that it will open an ASC, Chandrasekher said. Three or four more ASCs will open in the coming months, he added.

This workstation software can take advantage of hardware initiatives being pressed by Intel, Chandrasekher said. In 1998, for example, Intel will offer Slot 2 processors and motherboards built specifically for workstations, he said.

These systems will sport core logic other than the 450NX, a Slot 2 chip aimed at servers, Chandrasekher said. An AGP optimized for workstations should appear in the middle of next year, he said.

The upcoming AGP 2.0 specification will enable 4x AGP but will also call out a second connector that adds performance for workstation applications such as geometry rendering, Chandrasekher said.
