Kasan (Cube customer in Korea) introduces a PCI interface chip which allows existing DVD chips (presumably ZiVA) to run on older PCs. The potential DVD upgrade market has been broadened.............. New PCI Interface Chip for DVD Drives Kasan Electronics, one of the world's first developers of DVD boards, has launched a new version of its PCI interface chip capable of improving the quality of DVD pictures and sound. The updated version enhances the interface bit rate of the PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) bus by 150 percent, allowing low-performance PCs to offer high-quality video and sound when running DVD titles. The new ASIC chip, dubbed KSE9801, is perfectly compatible with other peripheral devices. With circuits integrated in high density on it, the small-sized chip contributes to making the DVD board smaller. Kasan said its new chip has allowed it to lower its board prices by $15 per unit, making its boards more price competitive in the international market. According to the company, mass production of the new chip will start this April, with the release of new DVD boards featuring it slated for June. The company's new boards will cost around $70 per unit, down $15 from the present $85. ??????
