3Com Supports Desktop Management Task Force Standardization of
Directories-Enabled Networks

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 1998--As the technological leader in policy-based networking solutions, 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS - news) today announced its support to transfer the industry-wide effort to specify standard directory services from the multi-vendor Directories Enabled Networks (DEN) initiative to the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) standards body.

A standard for directory services (i.e., services delivered over a network based on a repository of user information, such as user ID, access codes, etc.) lays the foundation for networks to deliver optimum bandwidth utilization, policy-based management, lower total cost of ownership, and to create a single point of administration for all network resources.

3Com is a member of the DEN and the DMTF as well as the first vendor to announce policy-based networking and a proposal to link this advanced networking concept to industry standard directory services. 3Com pioneered the introduction of policy-based networking, which utilizes advanced intelligence in networking equipment to enable IT professionals to ensure that networks operate according to business needs (e.g., mission critical applications get top priority within the network).

''The industry is moving in the right direction by tying the proposed DEN standard to the Desktop Management Task Force,'' said Roy Johnson, 3Com vice president and general manager of network management. ''An industry standards group with a desktop focus is the right place to address this issue. This validates our long-held assertion that next-generation, policy-based networks must include directory services that interact with intelligence distributed across all network devices, including the desktop -- or network interface card -- as well switches and routers.''

3Com's strategy is to give customers more control over their networks through innovative management applications, standard directory services and standard embedded software, such as the IEEE 802.1p, 802.1Q, and full RMON (remote monitoring) to enable deployment of voice, video and data applications.

A recent example of this innovation is 3Com's TranscendWare traffic prioritization solution for the LAN and WAN, announced in February. This new solution allows businesses to prioritize performance of applications on networks according to importance or technical requirement (e.g., financial and video conferencing applications would receive more network priority than recreational Web surfing).

The directory-enabled networks initiative will design a standard schema for storing network data and an extensible information model for holding network information, such as rules/policies, configuration information and organizational details. This work complements the DMTF-sponsored Common Information Model (CIM) specification and utilizes Light Weight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) specification as the core access protocol.

The Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) is the industry consortium chartered with development, support and maintenance of management standards for PC systems and products, including DMI (Desktop Management Interface), the most-widely used management standard today.

Founded in 1992, the DMTF brings together more than 200 key technology and support-industry providers to create the tools and infrastructure for enabling a more cost-effective, less crisis-driven approach to PC management.
