<<I'd much rather see a PowerPC Mac-Lite PDA.>>

Agree with your choice...especially in terms of cost/market. The main technical problem of the PowerPC PDA would be battery life. The Newton has penetrated some important vertical markets...medicine being an example. Jobs should have kept the Newton alive for the education market alone...certainly until a new PDA was available.

Apple's "smooth transition.." quote from the PR announcement was typical Apple doublespeak. They screwed their PDA developer base. A year is an eternity in that business. I had thought that Jobs had brought Newton/e-mate back into Apple to facilitate a low-cost survival and transition, keeping customers and developers happy until the new products come out. I even expected a special price discount and software rebates for Newton customers.

Jobs needs to bring the new CEO on board ASAP. He has too much on his plate and his lack of talent in certain areas is hurting Apple. If I wanted to get worried, I would say that this is clearing the decks for an acquisition. IMHO, that is the last thing on Jobs' mind.
