Tim, The Wizard is busy as the dickens over on a couple of other threads...but you have some good questions... I'm not even sure where to look for the actual total numbers on masks, though I believe DPMI has 37 percent of the total market... We can try checking around a bit for those numbers... they would be particularly useful if one had a way of comparing total chips against total masks... It would yield an excellent index of Chip Complexity, don't you think?

Tim, I discussed a bit with the Wizard...and proposed to him a "Complexity Index"...which would have as it's denominator the total number of chips shipped, worldwide, and as the numerator, the total number of photomasks shipped. The fact that more masks are needed for more complex chips would mean that the new "Complexity Index" tells us the rate of transition...leading to judgements about possible equipment purchases, forecasts of further photomask demand, etc.
So far all we can say is that there is a discussion underway... please stay in touch! TSO The Wiz' reply:
