Texas Instruments (TXN-Strong Buy-$58) 3/02/98
Investor Suitability: Aggressive Growth
We spoke to TXN management on Friday. TXN indicated that demand for its DSPs and related products remains strong despite events in Asia and inventory adjustments by some of its customers in the wireless market. Additionally, the wireless market is seasonal, but TXN's breadth of customer base and penetration of new models is offsetting this seasonality. DRAM prices slipped back last week to the $3 to $3.25 level from the $3.50 range for 16 meg DRAMs. Asia remains under pressure, but Europe is stronger than expected where TXN is winning new designs for DSPs in new applications. TXN will hold its annual analyst meeting on March 4 th and 5 th . We expect management to be upbeat about the company's outlook since TXN has undergone a massive restructuring over the last 18 months. Texas Instruments earnings are highly leveraged and the full benefits of the restructuring are not fully reflected in the results. We reiterate our Strong Buy rating and 12-month price target of $75.
