Graphic Workstation: This is a new role?

Yup. Until a few months back Apple just happened to be strong in the graphics market. Now they are aiming their guns at it. This is not my opinion, I'm paraphrasing Jobs from last year's MacWhatever when he said, among other things "when was the last time we went to Adobe and
asked 'what can we do for your software to run better and faster?' ".

This is a new role for Apple, away from the battle of the desktop and into the battle of "defend your niches".

you're suggesting that OS development and production are going to slowly (or perhaps not so slowly?) drop away from Apple.

Not necessarily, SGI has its own propietary OS, Irix.

Macs have long been successful graphics workstations right out of the box,

Correct

and that the continuing development of the PPC processor and the Mac OS/Rhapsody only makes the computer better able to do something it's always done well.

That is the way things used to be. Jobs said that they should make the Mac better for Graphics on purpose and with the collaboration of software manufacturers.
