Two movies seen lately:
True Romance:
Totally surprised by this movie, despite raves from mis amigos. All-star cast (usually a warning flag for me) really pays off, with Christian Slater, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, and even Brad Pitt turning in rather excellent performances. A Tarantino script, with his fingerprints and trademarks all over it, yet avoids the slick-almost-too-cool feel of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. High recommendation.

Boxing Helena:
Blech. Yucky. Nearing horrible. Meant to be a surreal expedition into obsession/possession, it comes off comical. Sherilyn Fenn isn't all that, Julian Sands is pathetic, the soundtrack makes the whole thing look like a farce. Visually mediocre, scripting sub-par, I found this to be a sparkler where they were aiming for a flame thrower. What pisses me off is that it is a rather great premise, with such great possibilities, but it seems to make a mockery of itself. Burn all copies of it you can find.

I find I am much more forgiving of frivolous, trite, or campy (etc.) films if they reach what they are aiming for. They keep the bargain they strike with you. What gets my goad are films that dress up as something lofty, ground-breaking, or new, and just do the same old crap.

Well, I really don't care that much...but this is a movie thread, and melodrama is my middle name.
