"Officials also outlined several near-term directions for its NC line. A new low-end model, priced around $500, will be forthcoming within the first half of this year, according to Howie Hunger, general manager of IBM's Networking Computer Division.

Hunger last week said IBM's object this year is to have "hundreds of thousands of installations" of its NC products. The new device is aimed at competing with Microsoft's Windows-based Terminal, which offers thin-client access to Windows NT servers using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol and Windows CE client OS.

Also last week, IBM revealed that it would arm its large AS/400 base with better NC support, introducing new NCs in the second half of the year with support for the native AS/400 twinax cabling. IBM's existing line of NCs handles only token ring and Ethernet.

Moreover, IBM said that its full line of NCs will come to support 100-Mbps Ethernet, a speed supported today only on its top-of-the-line Model 1000 Network Station."
