David, I don't trust "analysts" farther than I can throw them. But neither do I trust Compaq's BTO plan for one very simple reason: inventory balancing using the intermediate channel member as the final build station has got to me a nightmare.

And I would point out to you that while not as damaging as excess inventory, inventory shortages hurt the bottom line by leading to lost sales.

I could be totally wrong here, but I simply mistrust Compaq's BTO model. It's too cumbersome and it inevitably creates quality problems. Just call me a skeptic.

Thank you for the post. Very interesting. Did you happen to notice that all three of the links you posted to different articles were written by the same man? Roger C. Lanctot?

One author ==> 3 articles saying the same thing. Interesting.
