I don't usually like to buy version 1.0 of anything, but I will make an exception if you recommend it.

Somebody recently posted a URL to the company that Visioneer was OEMing the OCR engine from. On that company's web page, it appeared they were up to version 4.0 of the software. However, in these days of Windows NT starting at 3.1 rather than 1.0, one can never be too sure about a package's lineage.

(Please, don't anyone let my old high-school English teacher see that paragraph!)

You can get a functional demo version of ExperVision TypeReader Pro at
207.126.107.75 I'm not sure what makes it a demo version because it seems fully functional. Probably some sort of time bomb. See if it helps your serif font problem. It works very well with the standard newspaper Times font. Newsprint should be scanned slightly lighter than normal (~65 or so) to avoid picking up extraneous garbage.

Because of the price difference, the Visioneer product probably has the previous version of the TypeReader OCR engine though the executables are similar in size. It also has dictionaries for major European languages whereas the Expervision product has specialty dictionaries such as medical, legal, etc. The Visioner OCR user interface is also much better and the product is more fully integrated with PaperPort (it starts to OCR automatically when scan is sent to its link).

Best,
