Paul,

If in fact most of the new employees are developers why don't they just work at
home and log into each other via the net. In an area where ideas and human capital
are important why is it necessary to have white elephant buildings at all?

1. Some guys have to go to an office because s/he has hard time
to stop working. It's not easy to draw a line and say that's it
for the day.

2. If one is just a R&D, it won't matter too much. But for
Super R&D Teams, it's more convenient to be at one place and
most of all for security.

3. Newbies on the block need to know about company's culture
at the beginning.

4. For some, s/he feels more comfortable with other adults.
Also don't want to miss out "future contacts". etc...

It works wonderful with me. But Bipin is the person who needs
to go to his office 6-7 days a week.

regards,

BPP(Bipin's partner)

As a general rule, team software development at mutually exclusive locations is a recipe for disaster. When those locations are the individual developers' homes, the problems are amplified. Having said that, in some cases, with some individuals, it's positively optimal.
