regarding the java client in 'limbo':
well, heck, if IBM or whomever cares about netscape's java effort or javagator, then they should contribute monetarily and in any other related resources.
Netscape obviously cannot support those efforts and needs to meet bottom lines to save itself from the street beatings..
if it is left alone to float, netscape might suffer more, and for this particular area, microsoft will be left to drive, adding its own twists, and in the end saying: damnit, I told you this about java..
microsoft's deeps pockets need a match, IBM has it.
I think it is about time for IBM, SUNW, Oracle etc, not to buy netscape, but to support it in one way or another. What are they waiting for?

Mike:
Tomorrow is the big day for Bill: the testimony before the senate judiciary committee (I think Orrin Hatch sits on that committee). Bill is already backing down in Europe. We'll see how well he's going to fare with the DOJ and the senate.

Right now the Internet is a free medium. The Government doesn't want to mess with it. Their policy is pretty clear: unregulated environment. The question is how far will Microsoft be allowed to go in the food chain ?- Content, Conduits, and User Interface (desktop, lite clients, web-TV, network vehicle, speech). This primary question will determine what industry segments Microsoft plans to dominate and monopolize besides software (applications and operating systems). They'll probably use their niche (and marketshare)in one/more product(s) to drive the sales of other products (and of course use their creativity to deem it added functionality). I don't think the average consumer (including financial analysts) or a programmer understands the risks and tradeoffs.

It is important to have a good vision. It is equally important to realize that vision with sound business principles.
