Well, I think you are right about the buddy effect. Now that I look over the wreckage of the afternoon's action, it seems that the bloodletting was fairly broad.

I didn't catch it, or even the details yet, but Tellabs presented their "Update and Outlook for 1998" at Goldman's Communications Technology Retreat at 9:30am PST today (concurrent with 3 others presenting in different rooms). Tellabs (again, Mike Birck) speaks one more time - tomorrrow at 8:45am on "Broadband Cross Connects".

My guess is perhaps conservative comments or tone was offered, but it may well have been simply part of the tech/telecom pullback.

I think you are mostly right about Lucent. It's Nortel that is getting most of the big new orders and my interviews at the leading edge companies in fiber deployment leads me to believe that Ciena is slipping for the moment. None the less, I am eager to see them rebound, as entrepreneurial companies often do in the face of devastating competition from huge but slow moving rivals such as Nortel and Lucent. Ciena is now integrating a large team from Lucent. I promise I have not given up on them.
