When I started Progenx in 1987, private companies spent about $100,000 per employee which was much higher than academia. University are much more cost effective in the basic research level (salaries are lower as are indirect costs). Companies focus on products. Each has a different set of costs, but the same position usually is paid less in acamedia, and Universities get price breaks in many areas. A company generally pays more for the same service because they have more money to spend.

Notwithstanding the fact that I am an unabashed capitalist, I believe that government funding of the NIH is critical to finding better ways to fight cancer. The simple fact is that most private companies do very limited basic research because it it very difficult to get basic reasearch funded in the private sector. Basic research at University Cancer centers throughout the country is critical to stopping this dreadful disease. Much of the technology that biotech companies are bringing to fruition were originally developed at universities. In addition there are may many brilliant scientists who simply prefer the academic environment even if it means making less money. The lack of government resources is for cancer research is inexcuseable and inexplicable.

>I acknowledge that many things have been discovered thru acadmeia
>but they mostly have been brought to actual use thru private/public
>companies!!!! The question is whether non government funded
>companies can do the work that is done in universities for less
>money. I think they can. Universities waste money. They waste a lot
>of money.

Most basic research is done in university laboratories using government funding. When the results of research look promising, companies are often set up to develop products based on that research.

Universities also maintain a pool of people who educate the people who work for industry. Think of it as maintaining the human heritage knowledge. Like it or not, this is vital to any modern society.

There is no way private companies can do what universities do for less money. You need to peruse some contracts; it would give you an education.

No offense intended, but I honestly believe you are all wrong here.

Thanks, Torben
