FUGAZI, That's my point. Grad students make less than professors and students make less than technician, and technicians who work for academia make less than those who work for companies. In academia, everything is cheaper. When I moved my lab to Progenx from Scripps, all employees made more money, even though most of the work was the same. If the pay was the same, then few would chose to work for a company.

I would tend to agree with Henry here Fugazi. I am in the software business and software for educational use (a grant often applies) is a fraction of the retail. Computer companies give massive subsides to universities to use their equipment. You can't compare the cost of a TA to a lab technician in the 'real world'. And noone ever said, I'm leaving a major pharm because some liberal arts college offered me a 4 or 5 digit increase in salary.
