Hiram, good article. Last summer, I visited one of the power companies mentioned in this article on a job interview. I interviewed with one of the persons mentioned in the article. They had a very good operation, and will no doubt take a chunk out of the incumbent telco's business over time. However, I lost some confidence in them when there was a power outage, and the building lost power for over half an hour right when my interview started. There wasn't even much of a rainstorm outside. Now, this was at the main headquarters office building for a power company...I was dying to ask them about central office reserve power plants - one of my favorite topics, but I didn't want to seem like a wise guy. Ray.

Thanks for excellent heads-up on electric utility activities in telco space. I'm still scratching my head over Nortel's internet over electric powerlines initiative. Wonder how it will play out.

With the economics of this industry so sensitive to penetration rates, I sometimes feel that this industry is almost a natural monopoly.
