Company Press Release

France Telecom Transpac extends its Internet/Intranet Network in
Partnership with Ascend

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1998--France Telecom [NYSE:FTE - news]
Transpac announces its IP access network has doubled following the
commercial success of its Internet (the Internet Avantage range),
Intranet (Global Intranet and Package Intranet) and Extranet (Global
Extranet) services. Its capacities have increased from 16,000
simultaneous customer connections to 30,000 simultaneous customer
connections. This increased capacity is based upon Ascend equipment,
including the deployment of Ascend's high performance MAX TNT and MAX
4000 WAN access servers, as well as the implementation of K56Flex modem
technology that will comply with the new ITU-T V.90 modem standard. This
will enable France Telecom Transpac customers to dial in to its 3 IP
services at speeds up to 56 Kbps (almost as fast as ISDN) using an
analogue modem connection.

France Telecom Transpac chooses Ascend technology

As the first global network carrier, France Telecom Transpac had to
acquire high performance access products. Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT
Access switches meet Transpac's demands and enable the company to
provide users of its Internet, Intranet and Extranet services with
access via the normal telephone network, and not via their company
network. Therefore, these users can now have access to Internet,
Intranet and Extranet services from their homes or any other location.

This network enables access to France Telecom Transpac's 3 IP services :

-- Internet access for companies and services suppliers. -- Global
Intranet, that enables secure access to Internet

technologies on enterprise networks, and Package Intranet, the version
dedicated to Small to medium size SMEs,

-- Global Extranet, a unique solution that enables a company to set up a
direct contact between its clients and its Web server

A fast growing network

Traffic on Transpac's network has more than doubled in 1997 mainly due
to the increasing importance of IP.

''We are very pleased about this active partnership with Transpac.
Transpac's innovative services show the application possibilities of the
New Public Networks,'' says Curtis Sanford, Senior Vice President and
manager of International operations at Ascend.

''Today, we are facing a very strong growth in this market as well as a
tremendous expansion of Internet services,'' says Daniel Caclin, General
Manager of Transpac. ''Our partnership with Ascend enables us to face
the tremendous growth of our network while offering our clients new
services that give them the possibility to fully enjoy the
Internet-Intranet-Extranet dynamics.''

A flourishing market

According to a market study conducted by Dell'Oro and published in
November 1997, Ascend is number one on the access ports market with a
51.2% market share.
